Super Name: Arctic Emerald

Alter Ego Name: Martin Locklear

Alignment: Hero

Gender: Male

Age: 46

Physical Description: As a human, he is a 5'6" man of Inuit descent. He has dark eyes and thin, greying hair. Liver spots cover his cheekbones and his thin lips are always pulled into a drawn grimace. As Arctic Emerald his stature grows to about 6'8," his skin turns into a super-hard crystal resembling deep blue ice, and his eyes shine with a brilliant green glow.

Costume: Arctic Emerald's costume consists of a skintight bodysuit made of a radiation-resistant organic polymer. Power conduits run like veins along the chest, arms, and legs, shining a brilliant blue, siphoning off the auroral radiation he emits and slowly dissipating it as harmless magnetic pulses. Ancient Tuurngait runes are spread along the chest and arms. Pale blue elbow-length gloves, a pale blue leather belt set with an emerald buckle, and a short, green, ragged cape complete the outfit.

Biography: Martin Locklear's mother was Laura Bankburn, a cellular biologist from New York. She fell in love with the handsome and brilliant Gerald Locklear, second-generation son of an Inuit immigrant and one of the US' top anthropologists while they were both working at Edgewuld Base in the Arctic. The Edgewuld project was funded by a party who was convinced the Inuit mythological spirits were actually extraterrestrials who had left secrets for mankind if mankind looked hard enough.

For six years Laura and Gerald worked hard at Edgewuld, but after making very little progress, they decided the generous pay wasn't worth it and they left together, married, and started a family in Colorado.

After having one child, a boy they named Martin, the two scientists resumed work in their various fields, raising Marting with a love for science and Inuit mythology. Martin was every bit as smart as his parents, obtaining a dual degree in Physics and Anthropology by the age of twenty, at which time he was approached by the same organization which had approached his parents so many years ago.

Laura and Gerald advised him not to take the job, unable to believe the project was still going despite having made no progress in nearly thirty years, but he took it anyway, hoping to use the good pay to fund his own research projects.

Four years passed in Edgewuld, and Martin's enthusiasm dimmed with every passing week. There was little to be found in the artifacts and etchings he  and his fellows pored over every day, and no amount of money could make up for the mind-crushing boredom of snow and ice day after day.

One day, however, Martin noticed something strange on his spectrometer readings. He set out for an icy outcropping where the Aurora Borealis danced in the sky. He looked up, alone, at the flames jumping and gliding and swimming, and felt something he'd never felt in the dozens of other times he'd seen the aurora in the arctic. Martin saw a cold intelligence, an alien consciousness which existed as plasma and radiation and static and light, and he could feel it talking to him.

The light descended, caressing him, whispering to him, asking him to let it in. Martin stepped forward, as if in a dream, running his fingers through the shining liquid song of the stars, feeling a thrill in his bones as his ancestors had on that same spot, communing with elder spirits from beyond the stars. "Yes," he whispered, and became one with the star that sang, the fire of ice, the shining green and blue of the earth and the sky.

Martin felt himself pulled through the skies on wings of light, streaming a beauteous rainbow behind him, his skin as beautiful as the deepest, coldest ice, thrumming with the power of the stars. He met the countless others who had come before him, accepting the power of the spirits, and learned from them the secrets of his destiny. That night felt like an eternity, but when Martin awoke, he was back on the hill, human again, but with a latent burning in his chest.

No one else in the compound realized what happened, and Martin quickly took his leave, retreating to a lonely town in the midst of Canada to try and understand his newfound powers. He knew, of course, why he had been chosen, to protect the weak and uphold that which is good. He is the light shining in the cold night, the song of the stars, the dancing fire across the face of the sky. He is Arctic Emerald.
